How the position leaderboards are ranked

Each position page ranks the players with the most games played at that position, and this index shows the top three at each. Games at a position come from the appearance records for every season, so a player who moved around the field is credited only with the games actually played at each spot. The largest total anywhere on the index is Brooks Robinson's 2870 games at third base. The pitcher board is ranked on games pitched, which favors long relief careers: Jesse Orosco leads with 1252.

A games leaderboard measures durability and a long hold on a position rather than quality, so each position page also shows every leader's career hits, home runs and batting average for context. Designated hitters are not ranked here, because the position table covers fielding positions only. For quality rankings, the career and single-season leaderboards and the PIV boards are linked from each page.
