How to use the team directory
This directory lists every team code in the site's data: 257 in all, 30 of them current and 227 historical. A team code is the short identifier the record books attach to a club in a given city and era, so one franchise can appear under several codes when it moved or changed leagues. The Current Teams tab holds the 30 codes that played in the latest season on record; the Historical Teams tab holds the rest, including nineteenth-century clubs, the Federal League, and Negro Leagues teams that MLB now counts as major league. Each card shows the code, the club name, its first and last seasons, and the number of seasons filed under it. The longest-running code is CHN, the Chicago Cubs, with 150 seasons from 1876 to 2025. The earliest card belongs to BS1, the Boston Red Stockings, whose first season was 1871.
Many historical codes cover a single season, such as AB (Algona Brownies, 1903), AB3 (Indianapolis ABCs, 1938), and AC1 (All Cubans, 1905). Use the search box to filter by name or code, and the sort menu to order cards by name, by most or fewest seasons, or by most recent season. Opening a card leads to that code's season table, with the record, finish and postseason result for every year; each year then links to a full team-season page with the roster, team leaders and a comparison with the league average. For a franchise's whole history across codes and cities, use the franchise pages instead.
