How the comparison pages work
Baseball Data Hub has built 17,354 head-to-head pages, each comparing two careers on one screen. They are grouped by the argument each one settles: Marquee Matchups (1,002), Hall of Famer vs Hall of Famer (2,045), Same-Era Rivals (9,939), Longtime Teammates (979), Today vs the All-Time Greats (3,333), and Baseball Families (56).
A comparison of two hitters or two pitchers opens with a scoreline of how many scored categories each player leads, then shows both career stat cards, a side-by-side table with the leader of each row marked, the PIV comparison, the best seasons of each player and a written verdict. Counting totals favor longer careers, so the rate rows (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS for hitters; ERA, WHIP and strikeout and walk rates for pitchers) matter most when the careers differ in length. PIV, the site's era-adjusted value measure, is the one figure built to compare players from different decades on the same scale.
When one player is a pitcher and the other a hitter, the page keeps them in separate tables rather than grading a pitcher on his batting. Totals for active players update each night with the rest of the site's data.
